Coronavirus Entry Restrictions for Vietnam

In light of the recent COVID-19 outbreak, Vietnam has imposed several travel restrictions on those entering the country. As of March 15, Vietnam had confirmed 57 cases of the coronavirus, though 16 of the patients had recovered.
The Vietnamese government officially declared COVID-19 as an epidemic on February 1, with authorities taking swift and strict measures to contain the virus.
These include measures such as the suspension of schools, the cancelation of festivals and tourist activities nationwide. In addition, bars, clubs, and movie theatres have also been closed in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City until March 31.
Vietnam visa policy will return to normality and restrictions lifted as soon as possible once the virus has been controlled.
From 1st February, Chinese citizens have had visas suspended and are therefore unable to enter Vietnam.
Other countries are subject to a temporary suspension of the visa-waiver program. The affected nations and suspension dates are as follows:
- February 29th: South Korea
- March 2nd: Italy
- March 9th: Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Spain
- March 15th: All Schengen Area member countries and the UK.
- March 22nd: The entry of all foreigners is suspended until further notice.
It is hoped that by taking swift, preventative action, further cases of COVID-19 in Vietnam can be limited.
Tourism in Vietnam During the Coronavirus Outbreak
Currently, tourist attractions and heritage sites in Vietnam remain open. However, some tourist sites such as Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and Yen Tu Complex will be temporarily closed to visitors.
A number of festivals and events in Vietnam have been postponed until later in the year as a precautionary measure.
Officials in Ho Chi Minh City have implemented restrictions on public gatherings. Meetings of over 1,000 people have been banned.
All bars, clubs, karaoke shops, massage parlors, cinemas, and online gaming centers will be closed until at least March 31.
Hanoi has taken similar precautions until at least the end of March 2020. Various other towns and cities are doing the same.
It is now mandatory to wear face masks in crowded places such as airports, bus stations, supermarkets and on public transport.
Although it was initially expected to go ahead as planned on April 5th, 2020, the much anticipated Vietnamese Formula One Grand Prix has now been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
